Reichenau an der Rax

For hundreds of years - especially since the completion of the Semmering railway in 1854 - Reichenau an der Rax has been a place where nature lovers and those seeking relaxation have spent their summer retreats . Especially at the turn of the century, artists and cultural figures came to Reichenau to find inspiration for their work. Since 1988, the town has also been known for the Reichenau Festival, one of the most important theater festivals in Austria.

Worthwhile experiences in Reichenau:

  • A ride on the Rax cable car: Austria's oldest cable car was completed in 1926 and was the first cable car for tourist purposes at the time.
  • Explore the Rax: Even Sigmund Freud loved walks and hikes on the Rax. Today, marked trails offer a variety of tours. In winter, the plateau transforms into an ideal area for snowshoeing - suitable equipment is available to hire at the summit station of the Rax cable car.
  • "Hut hopping" on the Raxalpe: hike from hut to hut, over mountain peaks and through mountain pine fields - depending on your fitness level, you can choose from easier to more challenging routes.
  • 1st Vienna Water Pipeline Trail: Through the wild and romantic Höllental valley, past rugged rock faces, a hiking trail leads from Kaiserbrunn to Reichenau along the Hochquell water pipeline, which has been supplying the Viennese with tap water since the second half of the 19th century.
  • Hike to the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben: On the Gahns, a foothill of the Schneeberg, Knofeleben is home to Austria's brightest refuge: the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben with its generous panoramic glazing. Anyone wondering where the Knofeleben got its name from: A particularly large amount of wild garlic grows there in spring.
  • Ride on the "Höllentalbahn" museum railroad : the four-axle passenger railcar pulls back and forth between Reichenau and Hirschwang. Along the route you have a wonderful view of the Rax.
