Opis

This combined stage leads from Aggstein via the Hammerschmiede in Aggsbach Dorf, climbing over the Hohenwarthberg to the Hohenwarther Höhe, which offers wide panoramic views across the Dunkelsteinerwald. Through wooded sections, the route then descends via Berging to Schönbühel, where the striking castle high above the Danube dominates the landscape.

Another highlight is the ascent to the Jonaskreuz, featuring a rest area and impressive views over the Danube, the Jauerling and the surrounding hilly countryside. Crossing the Pielachberg, the trail follows a historic farm track, passes Stift Melk and finally ends at the main square in the old town of Melk.

Walking the Wachau World Heritage Trail reveals, step by step, why the Wachau has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage region. Along finely curated World Heritage Spots, the defining World Heritage Highlights become visible—the interplay of historic cultural landscape, centuries-old viticulture, exceptional natural habitats and the Danube as a shaping force.

For a carefree all-round experience, including luggage transfers, tastings and transport services, booking one of the varied walking packages is recommended.

Thanks to excellent rail connections, a relaxed and sustainable journey to the Wachau is easy. Within the region, a dense public transport network ensures that all stages can be conveniently reached by bus, train, ferry and boat, making it simple to combine different stages.

The Wachau World Heritage Trail is also awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. This certification represents high standards in route layout, waymarking, safety and infrastructure, confirming the trail as a reliable and high-quality walking experience at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
