Welterbesteig Wachau: From the Arnsdorf Ferry to Aggstein
The stage from the Spitz–Arnsdorf ferry to Aggstein combines vineyard landscapes, panoramic rock formations and tranquil woodland areas. From Arnsdorf, the route first leads to the Arnsdorf vineyard sites and the Glauberkreuz rest area, before ascending through the Buchental valley to the striking Hoher Stein. An optional, secured section provides access here to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Wachau, offering wide views over the Danube valley.
The trail then continues to the monastery of Maria Langegg and into the peaceful forest landscapes of the Dunkelsteinerwald. Following varied forest and farm tracks, the route reaches the impressive Aggstein Castle Ruin, which towers high above the Danube. The descent leads down into the village of Aggstein, where this scenic and culturally rich stage of the Welterbesteig Wachau comes to an end.
Walking the Wachau World Heritage Trail reveals, step by step, why the Wachau has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage region. Along finely curated World Heritage Spots, the defining World Heritage Highlights become visible—the interplay of historic cultural landscape, centuries-old viticulture, exceptional natural habitats and the Danube as a shaping force.
For a carefree all-round experience, including luggage transfers, tastings and transport services, booking one of the varied walking packages is recommended.
Thanks to excellent rail connections, a relaxed and sustainable journey to the Wachau is easy. Within the region, a dense public transport network ensures that all stages can be conveniently reached by bus, train, ferry and boat, making it simple to combine different stages.
The Wachau World Heritage Trail is also awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. This certification represents high standards in route layout, waymarking, safety and infrastructure, confirming the trail as a reliable and high-quality walking experience at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
