Kreuzigungsgruppe am Retzer Kalvarienberg

The Calvary in Retz is located near the Retz windmill and is a listed building. Built from Zogelsdorfer stone and located at the top of the Retz Calvary, which was extensively renovated in 2024, it does not consist of the usual Stations of the Cross, but follows a program derived from the mysteries of the Sorrowful Rosary after Jesus' farewell to his mother Mary ("Urlaubsmarter").

There are the following five stations:

• Vacation Marter
• Mount of Olives scene with angel
• Flagellation
• Crowning with thorns
• Fall from the cross with Veronica and the sweat cloth

The ensemble stands on a solid plinth. In the center is Jesus on the cross. Mary Magdalene kneels beneath it, holding the cross. Mary stands to the left of the cross, John to the right. On either side are the crucified thieves.

A contract dated September 15, 1726 obliged Jakob Seer, a native of Eggenburg, to complete the crucifixion group, consisting of Jesus Christ, the two thieves, St. Magdalene, Mary and John, by the beginning of Lent in 1727. It is not known who created the other groups. However, they were probably also created by Jakob Seer. The Chrisi cross bears the date 1727 on its base.

The 319-metre-high hill was originally called "Katzenberg". It has only been called "Kalvarienberg" since the six sandstone groups were erected.
