Popis
The fairytale Ottenstein Castle sits enthroned on a steep granite rock high above the Kamp. Originally built as a fortification in the 12th century, it has developed over the course of time into a handsome seat of power.
Before the Lower Austrian energy supply company built three barrages on the Kamp in 1960, Ottenstein was a secluded castle.
Ottenstein was first mentioned in 1177 and was built as a defensive structure for the Babenberg settlements against the northern border. Moats and a stone bridge, outworks, gate tower and the semi-circular "Stöckl" with its two round towers still give an idea of its former function.
In 1624, the Counts of Lamberg came into possession of Ottenstein and a second phase of rebuilding took place: Disjointed wings and a tower were turned into a princely castle, and the former keep was transformed into a staircase.
Ottenstein Castle today
During a restoration phase in 1974, frescoes were discovered in the Romanesque castle chapel, a vaulted room with a semi-circular apse, which attracted art lovers from all over the world to Ottenstein.
Today, the romantic Ottenstein Castle is a popular wedding location in the Waldviertel. A dream location for weddings, family celebrations or other events of all kinds. Guests can find cozy overnight accommodation in the nearby Hotel Ottenstein.
