Popis

Baroque palace / park / Prince Eugene Pavilion / museum / St. Anthony's Monastery

Baroque castle

Obersiebenbrunn Palace, a mighty four-winged complex, is situated in an extensive walled area. In 1725, the castle was sold to Emperor Charles VI, who gave the property to Prince Eugene of Savoy as a gift in 1725.
The two-storey, four-winged building with a southern gate tower is grouped around a rectangular courtyard. In 1725/26, the existing building was rebuilt in Baroque style, adapted and refaced, presumably according to plans by Lukas von Hildebrandt.

Park

The park has been preserved over the centuries in its dimensions and basic character as a hunting park. The restored Baroque garden pavilion at the center of the park is now open to visitors on Monument Day.
The baroque park covers an area of 49 hectares and was designed under the rule of Prince Eugene, the former owner of the palace.

Prince Eugene Pavilion

Emperor Charles VI gave Prince Eugene of Savoy the Obersiebenbrunn estate as a gift in 1725. According to the sources, Prince Eugene had designs for the new adaptation of the medieval palace as well as plans for the gardens in his hands just two months after the gift. Presumably based on the design ideas of the garden architect Dominique Girard, star-shaped avenues radiate symmetrically from the main axis of the palace. A semi-circular section with the garden pavilion forms the end of the central axis.

This was built in 1728 according to plans by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The interior is decorated with allegorical frescoes and grotesque paintings by the Augsburg painter Jonas Drentwett. The paintings depict mythological groups of women, scenes of courtly hunting, harvest people, dancing peasants and figures of gods on chariots pulled by various animals. The pavilion itself rises above an elliptical ground plan and opens up to the park's hunting grounds with arched windows between pilasters and four rectangular portals.

It is not without reason that it is often hired for events of all kinds - its frescoes and grotesque paintings guarantee a truly atmospheric ambience

Museum

The castle is now home to the Coptic Museum, which offers interesting insights into the world of this Egyptian-Christian religious community.

St. Anthony's Monastery

Obersiebenbrunn Castle is now home to the Coptic Monastery of St. Anthony.
